Sermon: “Moses & the Glory of God” (Exodus 33:1-34:9)

In this sermon, we look at one of the most incredible stories in all of Exodus, if not the entire Bible.

After the children of Israel are dealt with for having fashioned the golden calf, God promises to lead them into the according to His promise, however because of their sin, God reveals that His presence will not go with them. Moses once again intercedes on behalf of the people, saying:

“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

Moses clings to God’s promise and understands that it is the very presence of God with His people that distinguishes them from the rest of the earth. God called Abraham and made a covenant with him so that God’s chosen people would reflect His glory to the world, whereby bringing blessing to the nations who turned from idols to worship the true and living God. It is only when God’s people allow God’s presence to lead them into God’s promise that the glory of God can be revealed to the rest of the world.

Once God promised His presence, Moses asked to see the glory of God, and we want to ask the same thing.
