[Essay] A Healthy Fear of Sin & The Enemy

“…sin lies at the door. And its desire [is] for you…” – Genesis 4:7

Do we realize the danger that sin poses on our relationship with God? Sin is not just something fun and pleasurable that God doesn’t want us to take part in; Sin is ultimate and eternal separation from God apart from the blood of Jesus.

God cannot be in the presence of sin and Satan knows this so he tempts us to sin in order to destroy the bond that we have with our Creator. The result- Adam and Eve’s communion with God was severed. We must never believe the lies of the enemy when we feel that we are being short changed by God. Sin offers so much and yet delivers nothing but anguish in the long run. It takes you farther then you want to go; keeps you longer then you want to stay and charges more then you want to pay. Thankfully, God sent Jesus to reconcile the world back to Him by accepting the penalty of the very sin that separated us from Him to begin with.

We often put sins into categories much like crimes. We think that we can get away with speeding from time to time but not drunk driving. This logic is flawed because even our little “white sins” are a capital offense! Our tiny fib caused Jesus’ beard to be ripped out. Our moment of “stumbling” secured His feet to the tree. Our wandering eyes resulted in His being irritated by the blood dripping from His brow.

Charles Spurgeon once said that we should never forget the “hell-deservingness of sin” which sadly most of us do. We often play with “little” sins, thinking that we can maintain a handle on things but quickly those sins can become gross insubordination and rebellion against our Lord. Christians often live in fear of the consequence of their sin instead of having a fear of the power of sin itself. A fear of sin’s consequence is not enough to cause us to maintain a safe distance from sin, but a healthy fear of the sin that nailed Jesus to the cross and of the enemy who desires to sift us as wheat is integral to keep us in unbroken communion with God. May God grant us this healthy fear of sin and the enemy.
