“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues [in it], and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” – James 1:22-25 NKJV
Ah, the ever comfortable seat in church. The place where you can be seen publicly as a “good” Christian and not have to worry about the other 6 days of the week.
But is God calling you to something more? Is He calling you to leave the mundane, the routine, to follow in His steps?
As Christians we get so comfy and cozy in our little church world that we neglect God’s call to all believers to be His ambassadors to the world. We have carved our little niche in the sanctuary where we are undisturbed… with the same people, who say the same things and are all perfectly content being mediocre in their walk with the Lord.
Hey! God did not leave the church on earth to start a big social group. He chose to leave us on this earth after conversion to shine His light to a dark world! How can we accomplish what God has called us to do when we sit on the sidelines as a spectator eating nachos and throwing back a Mountain Dew™ or three?
Many Christians, including myself, can sit and hear a good sermon and nod in agreement but sadly there is no action taken. There is no application of the Word in our lives. We can feel that the Lord is prodding us to use our gifts to minister to the lost but we can’t get out of our La-Z-Boys to do it.
God is challenging us to stop procrastinating and to be doers of the Word. We can all fall victim to the “pew potato” disease but we need to ask God for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit to get us into the game. Alright, no more excuses. We know what God wants us to do; it’s time to start doing it. We know that God has a plan for each and everyone of us; it’s time to start walking in it.
Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.” – Luke 11:28 NLT
